In Asterousia, locals continue to practise many small-scale activities like weaving and basketry. Members of family-owned workshops collect raw materials locally like wool or reed, and then process them in cottage industries.
Looms survive to this day in the village of Pyrgos, preserving the weaving art and passing it on to younger generations. You can get information about the art of the loom in the central market of the village and the local KAPI (old home), where you can find looms and hand-woven textiles. The villagers create beautifully decorated woollen rugs, patanias (wall hangings), vouryies (traditional woven bags), cotton or linen bed sheets, towels, silk dresses and other clothing goods. The decorative themes and colours are characteristic of the area and are inspired by nature, human experiences, and the local culture.
At the villages Ethia and Rotasi you can find workshops of basketry in the main square. Using reeds or branches of shrubs, craftsmen create everyday objects that serve the countryside lifestyle.
