Gorges
Agiofarago

The gorge is in the south of Matala and west of Kali Limenes in the southernmost part of western Asterousia. The route starts by road from the Monastery of Odigitria, and continues on foot passing through large vertical rocks and caves. It requires about an hour of hiking to cross it.

The area of Agiofarago has been a centre of asceticism since early Christian times and is associated with the presence of Apostle Paul in Kali Limenes.

According to tradition, the gorge got its name from the presence of 300 hermits that lived in the nearby caves (agiofarago means holy gorge). The church of Agios Antonios probably formed the centre of the monastic life of the gorge. Initially, there was a small church within the rock and gradually, as the community of hermits increased, the space grew to accommodate the needs of the community during the 14th and 15th centuries.

The gorge of Agiofarango ends at an impressive beach with imposing rocks, small pebbles, and turquoise waters.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
