Plateaus – other geotopes
Askyfou plateau

The plateau is in the south of Chania, at 1200m of altitude. This mountainous flatland is surrounded by high mountains; in the winter it is covered in snow, and in the summer, it hosts a big variety of plants.
It derives its name from the ancient word skyfos, meaning cup, since it resembles one. The inhabitants of the area work in stockbreeding, and since recently in tourism. There are many places to stay and eat that cater to travellers.
On the hills, in strategic observation locations, are the ruins of two Ottoman towers that date to the end of the 19th century. During the Greek War of Independence, the plateau became a battlefield.
The plateau continues into the gorge of Imbros. Many other hiking paths cross it and end up to the west towards the small plateaus of Niato and Tavri and its refuge. Towards the east, other paths lead to the village of Kalikratis and to the south to Fragokastelo.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
