Gorges
Borno Gorge (Ethiano or Havgas)

The gorge is close to the village of Ethia and is the largest gorge at the north of Asterousia. Towards its exit the gorge meets the Anapodaris river, while it directs what little water it has to the plain of Mesara.

Descending the gorge requires technical equipment and experience. It is quite popular with canyoners due to its descent of 65m. The total length is 5.3km, and you will need about four hours to cross it. It is indicated for experienced canyoners. At the exit of the gorge there is a large hiking route, that is accessible to all.

The gorge’s characteristic elements are geological formations like platy limestones, an impressive doline of about 15 to 20m long called Tafkos tou Peristera, a cluster of limestone folds called Roussos Egremos and some rare fossils in Asfendilia.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
