This castle is situated on the plateau of Askyfou in the Sfakia area and is a classified monument.
The topography and strategic location of the plateau, between the north and the south of the island, was ideal for the activities of the Cretan revolutionaries during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. During the Cretan Revolution, in 1866, the Ottomans built a fortress to gain control of the area.
The castle consists of two towers close together. One is better preserved than the other. Together, they were a central point of governing and control of the other castles in the area.
