Caves at Karydi

Around the village of Karydi, there are many caves, formed within the limestone rocks. Some of their names are Oxo Latsidi, Honos and Ano Peristera. These caves contribute to the preservation of biodiversity as they are shelters for bats, invertebrates, and insects.

Their common feature is their small surface entrance and their vertical development in the rock. The caves can be visited only by experienced cavers. Many require climbing equipment because of their steep slopes.

The Karydi caves are an important speleological destination for groups of researchers from Greece and abroad. The systematic recording of the area began in the late 90s by the French speleologist Jean Luc Carron and his team, with the participation of the speleological association of Crete.

The Karydi Speleological Information Centre provides information and equipment for those interested in visiting the caves.

To visit the Karydi caves, you need to contact the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology and Speleology or the Ephorate of Antiquities of the area.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
