Churches - Monasteries
Church Of Agios Georgios Xififoros

The church is near Apodoulou at the foot of Psiloritis.
According to an inscription dated to the 13th century, it used to be part of a monastery. It is a the single-nave basilica type. It was built on the spot of an earlier, smaller byzantine church, parts of which are preserved on the north side. Inscriptions inform us that the church was still in use in the 15th century.
The wall paintings depict scenes from the twelve important Christian feasts (dodekaorton) and the lives of saints. Most notable is the depiction of Saint George holding a sword, which gave its name to the church (xifoforos means swordman).

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
