Church of Panagia in Martsalo

The church is at the beginning of the Martsalo gorge that develops alongside Agiofarago. Together they form the valley of the hermits.

It is a cavernous church that was carved into the rock together with the cells of the monks. Today, the chambers of the monks Parthenios and Eumenios are preserved. It is these monks who renovated the Koudouma Monastery at the end of the 19th century. The church is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, according to an icon that shepherds accidentally discovered inside it in the early 20th century. Because the church has a domed form, researchers think it may have been built on the site of a Minoan tomb.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
