Church Of Saint Anna Nefs Amari

The church is located near the village of Opsigia in the valley of Amari, 34km from Rethymno.
Its inscription states that the first church was built in 1196. Parts of this first church were incorporated in the construction of the 14th century. Of great importance are the surviving wall paintings of 1225, which are probably the oldest examples of byzantine painting in Crete. The wall paintings are developed in the niche of the chancel and depict the deisis: the Christ enthroned, the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist. At a lower level there are depictions of local saints like the Apostle Titus and Andreas.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
