De Mezzo Mansion

The mansion is in the village of Etia near the plateau of Handras. Etia flourished during the Venetian period, together with the settlements of Handras, Armeni, Voila and Ziros, around the plateau.

The dating of the mansion remains unclear, but it probably belonged to the De Mezzo family, according to the coat of arms above the entrance. The mansion is built like a fortress, it has renaissance architectural elements and relief decorative themes with fantastic compositions and masks. Its plan is rectangular in shape and the building is divided into three levels. It had a courtyard and vaulted warehouses.

During Ottoman times, the mansion became the seat of the governor of the area. At that moment, a bath and sewage system were added to the building. The mansion served as a battlefield during the revolution of 1821, resulting in the destruction of the roof and other parts of the building. The earthquake of 1856 brought the collapse of parts of the first floor and some external buildings. In 1959 the mansion became a listed monument.
