Eligia gorge
The gorge is close to the village of Agios Ioannis and is parallel to the Samaria gorge. The itinerary starts from Agios Ioannis, and after a 3.5-hour hike ends at the beach of Selouda or Agios Pavlos. From there you can hike to Agia Roumeli (about one hour).
The gorge’s landscape is wild and rocky with steep descents and vegetation of cypresses and pine trees. It is also a refuge for a few Cretan wild goats as well as griffon vultures.
The total length of the gorge is 13km. It starts from the Omalos plateau, passes from the refuges of Kallergi and Katsiveli, the peak of Melidaou, the area called Potami and then reaches Agios Ioannis and the Libyan Sea. To hike it, you should overnight on the way and hire a local guide.
