Information point of the National Park of the White Mountains

The information point is situated at Xyloskalo, in the Omalos plateau, at 1250m of altitude, and close to the entrance of Samaria gorge. There is a small exhibition for the visitors of the gorge and the National Park, giving them the opportunity to get to know the environment and the unique ecosystems of the area. The exhibition also hosts students as part of educational and environmental activities and programs.
In the different thematic units of the exhibition, you can find information about the National Park, ecosystems, geological diversity and habitats, the diversity of the flora and the fauna, and the human activities in the area. The centre also organises periodical exhibitions about the environment.
In the surrounding area there is a small botanical garden, a botanical path and special viewpoints showcasing the rich flora of the White Mountains and raising awareness about the protection of the mountainous areas of Crete.
In the botanical garden there are 50 species of local plants, some of which are endemic to the White Mountains and Crete. The botanical path crosses an area that already hosts 42 local flora species and follows an itinerary with impressive viewpoints towards Omalos plateau.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
