Kato Peristeras Cave

The cave is near the village of Karydi in Peristeras.

It develops in Permian-Triassic phyllite rocks intruded into Jurassic limestone. The water erosion has destroyed part of the roof at the entrance, forming a 25m deep doline. The cave is 170m long and has rooms that reach 80m of length and 12m of height. Crossing it, you come across steep descents, large slopes, narrow passages, and rich cave formations.

Traces of ashes and human bones that were found within the cave suggest that the cave was inhabited during the 4th millennium BC. Later, the cave was used as a refuge during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
