Towers – Fortresses - Mansions
Kazarma Fortress

The fortress is located to the east of the city of Sitia, in a prominent position above the port.

It was founded in the 13th century replacing a fortress of the Byzantine period. Representations of the 17th century testify to the existence of a fortification towards the east, which included, apart from the tower, a fortification enclosure, a cathedral, and the residence of the ruler of the city.

Earthquakes and raids have damaged the fortress significantly. The Venetian authorities attempted to strengthen the fortifications but to no vail and the fortress was abandoned. After it was abandoned, the Ottomans did some interventions. Today only the tower, the enclosure and the courtyard with some rooms are still preserved.
