Martsalo Gorge

The gorge is located between the cape Lithino and Agiofarago, in the southernmost part of western Asterousia. The route is about 2km long and it is relatively easy to cross.

A landscape with white rocks, dense vegetation and some old hermit dwellings makes the route to the pebble cove at its exit especially charming. The small port of Martsalo, which in Latin means “a good port”, has been important since Minoan times.

The Μartsalo and Agiofarago gorges develop in parallel, and the area between them hosted for many centuries hermits, whose dwellings you can see along the way. The small church of the Panagia of Martsalo, carved into the rock, is located at the entrance of the gorge.

The vegetation along the route includes carob trees, wild olive trees, lentisks, spiny brooms, oleanders, and thorny burnets shrubs, while in the middle of the gorge is a cluster of Cretan date palm trees (phoenix theofrasti), a unique species endemic to Crete.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
