Monastery of Timios Prodromos Atalis

The monastery is close to Bali, 30km away from Rethymno. It was founded in the 17th century and renovated soon after in 1630-35 according to written testimony.
The ground where the monastery is built is uneven, so the monastery spans in different levels. The main church (katholiko) is outside the fortified walls. Within the walls lies the refectory, with fragments of wall paintings from the 17th century, as well as utility rooms.
The main church is double-aisled and was created in different periods from the 14th to the 16th century. The church bears architectural elements of western influence, like the ornate doorframe of the entrance, the triangular pediments, and the exterior sculptural decorations.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
