Panagia Kera

This church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is in Agia Roumeli, at the exit of the Samaria gorge on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo of Tarra.
The church was built in the 15th century, inside a pre-existing three-aisled early Christian Basilica. The basilica’s walls and apse are almost entirely preserved. At its basis there are many repurposed stones belonging to the ancient temple. The basilica had three aisles, a wooden roof, and an antechamber (narthex). The chancel consisted of two rectangular rooms on its sides, called pastophoria, and a stepped arch. On the floor, there are parts of a mosaic with geometric patterns dating to the 6th century.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
