Platania Gorge

This gorge is located north of the village of Platania. The route starts uphill from the area of Kokinocharako and ends in a large open valley.
The path is steep but accessible, with vegetation of wildflowers and old olive groves that spread out in the valley of Amari. The view from above is impressive, with cliffs, rocks, and steep slopes.
A river flows through the gorge and then joins the Platy River. In one of the gorge’s many caves is the church of Agios Antonios, at a height of 800m. On the other side of the gorge a cave is dedicated to the god Pan.
Along the route, Miocene rocks alternate with Tripoli limestones. Whereas towards the end of the gorge and in the open valley, there are Tripoli flysch.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
