The spring is located on the north-eastern edge of Psiloritis and is 8km away from the city of Heraklion. The spring is the largest in Crete and directs its water towards the sea through the Almyros river. The water is mixed underground with sea water, resulting in brackish water.
The source is supplied by the mountain range and plateaus of Psiloritis, through sinkholes and underground rivers. Water is driven towards the surface due to the Tylissos – Krousonas fault.
