Stroumboula Plateau
The Stroumboula plateau develops at the south of a mountain range with the same name. The mountain is 22km from the city of Heraklion, and its eastern peak has a characteristic conical shape.
The plateau consists of rocks of the zone of Tripoli, which create caves and precipices due to karst erosion. A characteristic formation is a sinkhole in the centre of the plateau that collects water during winter and drains it in the summer.
There is an impressive formation consisting of a large limestone rock that, due to erosion, has curves, cracks, and characteristic karrens (ribbed and fluted rock surfaces).
