The refuge is on the Tavri plateau at 1200m. You can reach it from Askyfou, either by car via a 7.5km dirt road, or by a two-hour hike through an impressive forest path. The route is considered moderate.
It was founded in 1992 and can accommodate 45 people. Throughout the year, the refuge organises camps for all ages. From the refuge, hiking paths reach the Kastro peak (2219m) and the Sfakiano and Kavi gorges. The E4 path also passes from there, coming from Katsiveli refuge.
