Tzanis cave

The cave is in the Omalos plateau, about 2km away from the entrance to the Samaria gorge. It is 280m deep but has paths of 3000m in total. The inside of the cave is impressive with underground waterfalls, lakes, shafts full of water and rich decoration with stalagmites and stalactites. It is also the home of protected bat species.
The mapping of the cave started in the 80s; it is not yet fully explored. It is not accessible to the public and can only be visited by caving teams.
The cave is subject to local legends and stories. It is said that Markos Tzanis, a Cretan fighter, found refuge inside the cave during his fights with the Venetians and the Ottomans, but never managed to get out.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
