The palm forest grows in clusters in Agios Nikitas, close to the beach with the same name.

The Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrasti) is endemic to Crete, and this forest is a protected area. It is the only dense cluster of trees in the area, supplied with water from the source of Kefalovrisi and located far from the sea. There is a fence protecting it from grazing sheep and goats.
