Agios Antonios Cave

The cave is on a small street off the path between Agios Ioannis in Kapetaniana and Koudoumas Monastery. The road to reach it runs parallel to the rocky coast and offers unique sea views.

The cave has a large entrance 35m high and there are stalactites and stalagmites inside. In its large chamber there are tanks for collecting water and a small church dedicated to Agios Antonios. The church has wall paintings dating to the 14th century but only some fragmented scenes survive, like the one with the Crucifixion. The position of the cave offered isolation while protecting the hermits from the weather conditions.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
