The cave is located within Agiofarago gorge, close to the cavernous church of Agios Antonios.

Despite its small entrance, the cave has a spacious main chamber and a hole in its roof that provides ventilation and lighting. At the back of the cave, there are preserved parts of buildings.

The cave is considered particularly important for the history of asceticism in Crete, and especially in Asterousia. Tradition has it that 300 hermits were gathering at the cave once a year on the day of the resurrection of Christ. The rest of the year, they did not communicate with each other at all.
