Church Of Agios Antonios (Agiofarago)

The church is in Agiofarago, in the southwest of Asterousia, 1km from the parking area of the gorge and 250m from the Agiofarago beach.

In this uniquely beautiful gorge of the hermits, the church of Agios Antonios is a symbol of the tradition of monasticism. Agiofarago is linked with the spiritual movements of asceticism through the centuries. Personalities like Agios Grigorios from Sina and Agios Arsenios the Agiofarangitis have connections with the area and have contributed to the dissemination of monastic and hermitic ideas.

The form of the church changed over the years. From a small, cavernous church it evolved into a spacious church in the 14th-15th century, to meet the needs of the growing monastic community. It had wall paintings, but due to the climate of the area, the decoration is not preserved.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
