Gourgouthakas cave

The cave is in the area Atzinolakos, at a height of 1500m. A difficult path starts at the village of Melidoni, next to the church of Agio Pnevma (Holy Spirit). After a 3-hour hike, you will find the entrance of the cave.
With a depth of 1208m, it is the deepest cave in Greece and the second deepest in the Balkans. It develops vertically within thin platy limestone and black dolomites. The cave was discovered in 1990 by a team of French speleologists. During the exploration, the team detected a small sump at the far bottom end of the cave which is still unexplored. The cave is only accessible to speleologists as it requires experience and equipment.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
