Kamares Cave

The cave is located northeast of Kamares, to the south of Psiloritis, on the slopes of Mount Soros at an altitude of 1700m. It develops over the Cretan detachment fault within dolomites of the Tripoli zone.
The route from Kamares to the cave is steep and uphill; it passes through the Kamares Forest and takes about three to four hours. Alternatively, you can reach the cave from the Nida plateau through a path.
The cave is important because of Minoan findings that were found during excavations: vases of the so-called protopalatial style, dating to 2000BC. They were probably used in rituals. The vases were named kamaraic because of the cave. They are of exceptional style with thin walls, and colourful and elaborate decoration. Similar vases have been found in the palaces of Knossos and Phaistos and are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
