Plateaus – other geotopes
Pites Grias (Old lady’s pies)

Near the village of Prinias, within a creek, exists a special geotope. There, there are large, flattened, elliptical rocks 20m in diameter with an indentation around them, that makes them look like giant pies, stacked on top of each other.
The rock is a white Neogene limestone with many urchin and bivalve fossils, created six to seven million years ago. These formations were cut off from the top of the nearby hill and ended up within the creek. Their circular shape is due to the climatic conditions, namely the corrosive action of water and air.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
