Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary of Meronas

The temple is in the village of Meronas, in the valley of Amari.
It is three-aisled and dates to the 14th century. The central and north aisles are dedicated to Saint George and have interesting paintings. The south aisle is dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul, and dates to the 16th century.
There are wall paintings in the central and northern aisles from the 14th century. The art of the paintings has strong influences from Constantinople. The church relates to the prominent Kallergis family, and their coats of arms can be found in and outside the temple.
The wall paintings depict scenes from the twelve important Christian feasts (the dodekaorton), the life of the Virgin Mary and Saint George. The wall paintings are fascinating, full of idealism and bright colours.

The project is implemented through the Regional Development Fund of Crete
